Clean Hands, Clean Air
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
- Understand that germs on hands can get into the air
- Practice proper handwashing technique
- Know when to wash hands to help keep air clean
Big Question
"How does washing our hands help keep the air clean?"
Materials Needed
- Sink with soap (or hand sanitizer as backup)
- Timer or sand timer (20 seconds)
- Lotion with glitter mixed in (to show "germs")
- Paper towels
- Handwashing poster (or make your own)
Circle Time: The Connection (5 min)
Teacher Says:
"We learned that there are tiny germs we cannot see. Where do germs like to live? On our hands! And when we touch our face or share toys, the germs can get into the air and make us or our friends sick. Today we are going to learn how washing our hands helps keep the air cleaner and everyone healthier!"
Activity 1: Glitter Germs (10 min)
Demonstration:
- Put glitter lotion on your hands (the glitter represents germs)
- Touch things around the room - the doorknob, a book, a desk
- Show students: "Look! The glitter went everywhere I touched!"
- Have a student touch your hand, then look at their hand
- Now the "germs" are on their hands too!
Activity 2: Handwashing Practice (10 min)
The Right Way to Wash:
- Wet your hands with water
- Soap - add soap and rub it all over
- Scrub for 20 seconds (sing the ABC song!)
- Rinse all the soap away
- Dry with a clean towel
- Palms and backs of hands
- Between fingers
- Under fingernails
- Thumbs
Discussion: When to Wash Hands (5 min)
Important Times:
- Before eating
- After using the bathroom
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After playing outside
- After touching animals
- When hands look or feel dirty
Handwashing Song (2 min)
Sing to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat":
"Wash, wash, wash your hands,
Scrub them all around!
Bubbles, bubbles, everywhere,
Germs go down the drain!"
Sing twice to get 20 seconds of washing!
Wrap-Up Circle (2 min)
Ask Students:
- "Why do we wash our hands?" (To get germs off!)
- "How long should we wash?" (20 seconds - sing a song!)
- "When should we wash our hands?" (Before eating, after bathroom, etc.)
- "How does this help keep air clean?" (Fewer germs spread around!)
Key Takeaway
Washing our hands with soap and water removes germs. When we wash our hands, fewer germs spread to things we touch and into the air. Clean hands help keep everyone healthy!
Teacher Tips
Glitter Alternative
If glitter is too messy, use washable stamp ink or paint on hands to show how "germs" spread.
Practice Time
If possible, take small groups to actually practice at the sink. Supervision makes perfect!
